Woodhaven Is The Place To Be
During The 2002 Holiday Season

by Maria A. Thomson
Woodhaven shines like a brilliant jewel this Holiday Season. Little homes are like facets of a diamond, and the patriotic theme is evident as many of the bright lights in our jewel are red white and blue. The American flag flies on every block amid the holiday glow.
On Woodhaven’s Jamaica Avenue from Dexter Court to 100th Street, there lights and holiday music fill the air. Streets are 98 percent graffiti free as they get cleaned seven days a week, and there’s two-hour parking.
The quality of life in Woodhaven is top-notch, and the Greater Woodhaven Development Corporation, administrated by the Woodhaven Business Improve-ment District, is an important part of that strength.
Free holiday events continue with free pictures with Santa and friends. Last Saturday, December 21, from 1 -4 p.m., Santa and his friends Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer and Frosty the Snowman were in front of the Holiday Tree in the Forest Parkway Plaza Area, taking free pictures with young children and those young at heart and distributing free American flags, Welcome Santa to Woodhaven and Woodhaven Fire Badge stickers. Many came by to see Santa and friends before they started their visits and delivery of toys and gifts to good boys and girls!
So, as you write those last holiday cards, check your gift list twice! Visit Woodhaven’s Jamaica Avenue for food and do your last-minute, naughty-or-nice shopping. Every service or store can be found on Woodhaven’s Jamaica Avenue from Dexter Court to 100th Street. Shop locally and keep your shopping dollars in your community.
Also, Engine Company 293 is still in danger of closing. It is unfortunate that the FDNY chiefs are out-of-touch with our needs. Lives will be lost if this Engine 293 closes. We can only hope that Mayor Michael Bloomberg will listen to us and not to those that have lost interest and do not care about the loss of our lives. Individuals who try to denigrate our fire officers are the same individuals who diminish the importance of Woodhaven lives and property. Residents need Engine 293, and the thousands who signed petitions and attended the rally in front of firehouse ask Mayor Bloomberg to listen. We live here, they don’t.
So, enjoy the holiday amenities on Woodhaven’s Jamaica Avenue and Shop, Shop, Shop! On behalf of GWDC’s Board of Directors President Stephen Esposito, WBID’s Board of Directors President Mary Rooney, and our staff, we wish you and yours a very enjoyable holiday season and a very happy, healthy, safe and prosperous New Year 2003 with victory over terrorism.
May God bless our small town “Haven in the City,” and may God bless America.
