![]() CYO Bantam Basketball December 21 St. Stans 24-St. Aloysius 8 The Bantam boys improved to 6-2 in CYO play with another solid team effort. The Marlins controlled the opening tip and Jeff Durante (4 points, 17 rebounds, 3 st
St. Aloysius cut the lead to 4-2, but Murphy grabbed an offensive rebound and drew a foul going back up. Murphy sank both free throws for a 6-2 Marlin lead after one. The Marlins took control of the game in the second. The defense shut out St. Aloysius, and the offense increased the lead to 14-2. Murphy got it going with another put back after an offensive board. Then Gluick stole and passed to Murphy for a 8-foot jumper. T.J. Jones (6 points, 4 rebounds, 1 steal, 1 assist) intercepted a crosscourt pass and passed to Murphy for another jumper. Durante made the score 14-2 with an offensive board and a layup. St. Aloysius came out pressing in the third, but the Marlins were ready. Durante put back another offensive board and Gluick grabbed another steal which lead to Joe DAlto (9 rebounds, 1 assist), feeding Jones for a layup. After a St. Aloysius basket, Frank Santamaria (5 rebounds, 2 assists) passed to Jones, who hit an 8-foot jumper to make the score 20-4. Murphy got the final basket of the quarter on a give-and-go with Santamaria. In the fourth, the Marlins showed good sportsmanship by controlling the ball and using the clock. Jones hit the only basket for St. Stans in a 24-8 final. The boys got back to CYO action after the holidays on January 5 at 1 p.m. versus St. Pancras at Martin Luther High School. Come on out and cheer them on. St. Gregory Christmas Tourney December 21 St. Stans 42-Our Lady of Snow 24 The Marlins traveled to St. Gregorys in Bellerose on Saturday night to play in a Christmas tourney. The boys got off to a good start with a solid team victory. OLS controlled the opening tip, but missed their first shot. Jeff Durante (11 points, 18 rebounds, 3 assists, 3 steals) grabbed the rebound and went the distance for a layup and a 2-0 lead. Ryan Murphy (8 points, 13 rebounds, 2 assists, 2 steals) grabbed the rebound on the next OLS miss and dribbled down and passed off to Joe DAlto (10 points, 9 rebounds, 1 assist, 1 steal) in the low post for a layup. After an OLS basket, Stu Gluick (4 points, 3 rebounds, 3 assists, 3 steals) got the ball down low again to DAlto for a 6-2 score. OLS cut the lead to 6-5, but a Gluick steal and pass to DAlto increased the lead to 8-5. Gluick then made it 10-5 with a layup after getting a lead pass from Murphy. OLS came right back to make it 10-7, but Murphy hit a 12-foot jumper with the assist going to Durante and Frank Santamaria (1 point, 5 rebounds) hit a foul shot after driving hard to the hoop. DAlto made it 15-10 with an offensive rebound and a put back at the end of the quarter. The Marlins took control of the game in the second with Murphy and Durante combining for 10 points and 11 rebounds. DAlto added another basket as did Brendan Smyth (6 points, 6 rebounds) for a 29-14 halftime lead. The Marlins continued to play hard in the third. Gluick got it going with an 8-foot jumper with the assist going to Santamaria. Durante made it 33-14 with a 12-foot jumper after grabbing a rebound and dribbling up court. OLS cut the lead to 33-18, but Smyth hit a layup with the assist going to Gluick and then made the score 37-18 with an offensive rebound and a layup. Once again, with a big lead in the fourth, the Murphy played ball control. T.J. Jones (2 points, 2 rebounds) hit a 15-foot jumper with the assist going to Murphy and Durante hit a 3-point shot to make the final 42-24. OLH Bantam Tourney December 22 St. Stans 39-St. Margarets 21 The Marlins completed the sweep of their three games over the weekend with another team victory. St. Margarets scored the first basket, but the Marlins came right back when Stu Gluick (12 points, 6 rebounds, 3 steals, 2 assists) passed to Joe DAlto (5 points, 5 rebounds, 2 assists) for a six-foot jump to tie the score. On their next possession, Gluick once again fed DAlto, who drew the foul and made one of two free throws for a 3-2 lead. Jeff Durante (6 points, 6 steals, 5 assists) then stole a pass and drove the length of the court for a layup to make it 5-2. St. Margarets came back to make it 6-5. Ryan Murphy (4 points, 7 rebounds, 6 assists, 2 steals) hit a foul shot to tie the score, and Durante grabbed another steal and went the distance for a layup. Frank Santamaria (6 points, 3 rebounds, 2 assists) got the final points of the quarter with a layup off a pass from Murphy for a 10-6 lead after one. The Marlins took control of the game in the second, outscoring St. Margarets 7-1. Santamaria got it going with a layup after a Durante steal and pass to Murphy. Murphy then got the ball to DAlto for a layup. T.J. Jones (6 points, 3 rebounds) made the score 16-10 with a 12-foot jumper with the assist going to DAlto. After a St. Margaret foul shot Gluick capped off the scoring, making one of two free throws after drawing a foul on a drive to the basket. The Marlins pulled away in the third when Durante hit an 8-foot jumper with the assist going to Santamaria. Then Gluick made the score 23-7 with a steal and a layup and a reverse layup off a nice pass from Durante. St. Margarets cut the score to 23-11, but Gluick again hit a layup after receiving a long pass from Santamaria. St. Margarets still kept coming moving to 25-15 but Jones hit a 12-foot jumper with the assist going to Santamaria for a 27-15 lead after three. Both teams continued to play in the fourth. St. Margarets cut the lead to 27-19, but Santamaria made a layup after Durante grabbed a rebound and passed ahead to start the break. Gluick then made the score 30-19 after making one of two free throws after Brendan Smyth (7 rebounds, 1 assist) grabbed an offensive board and passed it to him. Gluick then grabbed an offensive board on the next possession and hit an eight-foot jumper to make it 32-19. Jones hit a layup off a pass from Murphy who on the next possession made it 37-19 with a free throw. Gluick hit the final basket to make 39-21 and a nice Christmas present for coaches Murray Molina and Sean Huges who work hard with these boys. December 22 Novice Girls St. Stans 20-Hope 9 On Sunday, December 15, St. Stans played Our Lady of Hope in their gym on Eliot Avenue in Middle Village. St. Stans guard Samantha Locasio and Jenna Halaby did an excellent job offensively and defensively. St. Stanislaus had excellent assists from the center and forwards. Marta Banach, Nicole Ilenard and Allison Donovan. Everyone scored two or more points. Our Lady of Hope played good defense. In the end, St. Stans managed to pull off a victory. |
