Earth Day Lightened Up With
Fluorescent Bulb Giveaway
10,000 Energy-Efficient Devices Distributed

Assemblywoman Catherine Nolan celebrated Earth Day last week by showing her support for a “go green” event organized by New York City Housing Authority at Queensbridge Houses in Long Island City.

To kick off the event, residents received 10,000 energy-efficient compact fluorescent light bulbs that will replace an average of six incandescent light bulbs per home. The new bulbs use just one-fourth the amount of electricity and last ten times longer.

“I am pleased to be a part of this important effort to raise community awareness about how each of us has the power to live more environmentally conscious lives,” Nolan said. “As we work together to reduce our energy consumption we will help relieve global warming.”

Reportedly, the switch to more energy efficient light bulbs at Queensbridge will save NYCHA approximately $367,000 annually, a 17 percent savings. In addition, greenhouse gases will be reduced by 1,400 tons per year.

“I applaud the people of Queensbridge for taking the initiative and giving us a prime example of how through simple acts we can all help improve the environment of our city,” said Assemblywoman Nolan. “I would also like to thank NYCHA Chair Tino Hernandez, Board Member Margarita Lopez and other members of the Board for including me in this event”.

Queensbridge Houses is the largest NYCHA development in New York City.
