83rd Precinct Council To Hold Mother’s Day Dance
Brooklyn Fund-Raiser Benefits Group

by Robert Pozarycki
Mothers, fathers and residents of all ages are invited to put on their dancing shoes for a good cause at the 83rd Precinct Community Council’s first Mother’s Day dance next Friday, May 9.

As announced by Council President Barbara Smith, the event will begin at 7 p.m. at Latinos Americanos Unidos headquarters located at 218 Wyckoff Ave. on the Ridgewood/Bushwick border in Brooklyn.

Smith informed the Times Newsweekly that while the dance celebrates mothers who are also being honored nationally on Sunday, May 11, proceeds being raised through ticket sales will be used to fund summer events sponsored by the precinct council and the 83rd Precinct Youth Council.

The youth council includes members of the 83rd Precinct Youth Unit and the Hope Gardens Community Center and provides services and activities for children living in the Bushwick area. Funds raised at the May 9 dance will be allocated to the youth council for its summer day camp, which will be held at HGCC between July and the first week in September.

The remaining proceeds from the dance will be used for the 83rd Precinct’s National Night Out Against Crime celebration, according to Smith. This year’s event is scheduled to take place on Tuesday night, Aug. 5 at Maria Hernandez Park, located at Knickerbocker Avenue and Suydam Street.

The annual event, which is held by police precincts across the five boroughs, is designed to promote safety and greater interaction between police and community residents. Smith said that last year’s event included various attractions including games, rides and musical performances, and this year’s festivities figures to be no different.

As noted, tickets for the Mother’s Day dance are $15 per person and will be sold at the door on May 9. Tickets may also be purchased in advance by calling the 83rd Precinct Community Affairs Unit at 1-718-574-1697 or 1-718-574-1735.
