     Glendale resident Apollonia Castiglione stands with her homegrown zucchini, slightly more than six feet long and still attached to the vine. She reported that while growing various fruits and vegetables has been a favorite activity for 26 years, the length of this Italian squash has exceeded all previous efforts by more than a foot.

Community Day In Midville Served Up Food And Fun
     Middle Villagers of all ages enjoyed a late summer day out at Juniper Valley Park last Sunday, Sept. 7 for the neighborhood's Community Day. Sponsored by the Middle Village Chamber of Commerce and the Dry Harbor Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, the event featured numerous games and rides enjoyed by children as well as live music, face painting and dance recitals. Chamber members and volunteers from the Ridgewood-Glendale Lions Club also cooked and served free food for the event. Council Candidates Stump At Liberty Park Meet
     The campaign for the City Council District 30 seat up for grabs in the November general election made a stop in Glendale last Tuesday, Sept. 2 for a candidates' night event hosted by the Liberty Park Home Owners Association. Middle Village Republican City Council Member Anthony Como (top left photo) and his challenger, Glendale Democrat Elizabeth Crowley (top right photo), pitched their ideas to the crowd assembled at Glendale Reformed Church while also addressing questions and concerns raised by those in attendance. The two candidates were separated by 38 votes in the June special election to decide who would occupy through the end of this calendar year the seat formerly held by Dennis Gallagher. The winner of the Nov. 4 general election will hold the seat through the conclusion of Gallagher's term, which expires at the end of 2009. (photos: Joseph Epstein)

Civilian Patrol Looks Ahead At Future Events
     Planning to provide protection and traffic control for a number of public events was the hot topic at last Wednesday's Glendale/104th Precinct Civilian Observation Patrol meeting at the Msgr. Sherman Knights of Columbus hall in Glendale. As noted, 104COP President Louis Kirchgessner asked for volunteers to help the patrol assist local police during the upcoming Maspeth Fun Run on Sunday, Sept. 14 and a Padre Pio procession in Glendale the following week.
