With the Tribute in Light glowing in the Manhattan skyline in the background, Middle Village residents gathered at Juniper Valley Park last Thursday, Sept. 11 to pay a tribute of their own to those lost in the terrorist attacks at the World Trade Center seven years ago with a candlelight vigil. Heavy flames and smoke poured out of the top floor of a Bushwick apartment house that caught fire last Friday afternoon, Sept. 12, Fire Department sources said. Reportedly, the one-alarm blaze broke out at around 5 p.m. on the third-floor of a home on Linden Street between Irving and Knickerbocker avenues. Vincent Gallo, pastor of Glendale's St. Pancras Church, spoke words of remembrance last Thursday morning, Sept. 11, at the site of the 9/11 time capsule, buried in the garden on church grounds. As part of the ceremony, firefighters planted flags. Community residents, along with St. Pancras School students, faculty and staff also attended following the celebration of Mass. A candlelight vigil for civilians and first responders lost in the 9/11 attacks was held last Thursday evening, Sept. 11, at Remsen Memorial Park in the Rego Park/Forest Hills area. Special note was made regarding local residents Stephen Hoffman, Firefighter Pete Nelson and Richard Allen Pearlman, who were lost. The event was sponsored by the American Legion Continental Post No. 1424, 112th Precinct Community Council, Community Board 6 and the Forest Hills Community and Civic Association. The driver of this sedan that struck a parked car and overturned along 78th Street near Penelope Avenue on Monday afternoon, Sept. 15 managed to walk away without injury and refused medical attention, Fire Department sources reported. Wanted Police are asking for the public's help in tracking down the suspect shown in this image captured by surveillance cameras who recently held up a Middle Village bank. Reportedly, the crook held up the Cross County Federal Savings Bank branch at 80-10 Eliot Ave. at around 10:30 a.m. on the morning of Friday, Sept. 5. Law enforcement sources said he took an undisclosed amount of money after passing a threatening note to a bank employee. No injuries were reported and no weapons were displayed. Police said the perpetrator fled from the scene in an unknown direction. The suspect is described as a caucasian male between 35 and 40 years old, standing between 5'6" and 5'10" tall. Anyone with information regarding the crook that could prove helpful is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-577-TIPS or send a text message with the code "TIP577" to 274637. Another Great Day In Glendale There was plenty to see and do at Forest Park's Dry Harbor Playground on Myrtle Avenue last Saturday, Sept. 13 as the Kiwanis Club of Glendale, celebrating its 55th anniversary as a community service organization, held its annual Glendale Community Day. As always, the Kiwanians worked the grill to cook for the crowd during the event, which had plenty of free prizes, giveaways, activities and entertainment. More ... Stone Unveiled For Civil War Hero Veterans joined U.S. Marines, Civil War buffs and elected officials for a ceremony last Sunday, Sept. 14 at Calvary Cemetery in Woodside. The event saw the unveiling of a new grave stone for Medal of Honor recipient Pvt. Henry A. Thompson of the U.S. Marine Corps, who served during the Civil War and later changed his name to Roderick P. Connelly. Thompson had been awarded for his actions during the assault on Fort Fisher, S.C., in 1865. The dedication serivice was conducted by the North Shore Queens Detachment of the Marine Corps League. College Students Lend Hand To Charity Corps Members of the St. John's University summer volunteer program recently helped the Salvation Army's Ridgewood Corps in their outreach efforts to those in need in the community As noted, the undergraduates from the Jamaica institution of higher learning assisted corps adminsitrators in stocking and organizing the pantry room, sorting donated clothing, shoes and other items and performed various administrative and clerical functions.
