House Passes Bill To Rename L.I.C. Post Office After Ferraro
Former V.P. Candidate Served Area
The House of Representatives has passed legislation to name the Long Island City Main Post Office after former Rep. Geraldine Ferraro. The Post Office is located at 46-02 21st St., in the district Ferraro represented in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1978 to 1984. "A trailblazer, role model, and leader, Geraldine Ferraro has been a pivotal figure in American history. The Long Island City Post Office is a grand building and a fitting edifice for an extraordinary woman," said Rep. Carolyn Maloney, the bill's author. "Through all of Geraldine's many successes in life, people in the area of Queens she represented remember her as their Congresswoman—a tenacious fighter who stood up for them and their interests." Added Rep. Joseph Crowley, "Following the path of women who came before her, Geraldine Ferraro has helped pave the way for our daughters to achieve anything they set their minds to." "I'm honored and humbled that the House voted to name a post of- fice after me, particularly one in my former district in Long Island City," Ferraro said in a statement. Co-sponsors of the bill include Reps. Crowley, Anthony Weiner, Brian Higgins, Maurice Hinchey, Gary Ackerman, Jerrold Nadler, John McHugh, Jose Serrano, Eliot Engel, Edolphus Towns, Carolyn McCarthy, Nita Lowey, Steve Israel, Charles Rangel, John Hall and Peter King of New York and Rep. Christopher Lee of New Jersey. Maloney introduced an earlier version of the bill, H.R. 774, toward the end of the 110th Congress. In 1984, Ferraro became the first female vice-presidential candidate on a national party ticket. In the House, Ferraro served on the Post Office and Civil Service Committee, among other committee assignments.
