CHARLES DeMANGIN, a former editor of the Ridgewood Times, died on June 6, 2009, at the age of 88.

A Ridgewood native, DeMangin attended Grover Cleveland High School before moving to Huntington, L.I. as a teenager, and then to Smithtown, L.I., graduating from Smithtown High School in 1938.

He attended Brooklyn College before entering the Army Air Corps in 1941. While in the service, he worked as a cryptographer, was editor of the base newspaper in Pisa, Italy, and studied journalism at the U.S. Armed Forces College in Florence, Italy.

After the war, he worked as a publicist in the entertainment industry in New York City, and was a freelance writer for such magazines as Esquire and Holiday. During the 1950's he was president of the Rambler Publishing Company and editor of the Smithtown Messenger.

He continued weekly newspaper work during the 1960's serving as editor of both the Ridgewood Times and The Observer, Huntington Town newspaper. During this time, he also ran a public relations agency servicing accounts in the health care industry in Suffolk and Nassau Counties.

DeMangin began his career in daily media as a reporter and feature writer for the New York Herald Tribune, and then, for eleven years, as a reporter, feature writer, political columnist and night editor for the Long Island Press. After leaving newspaper work in 1977, he worked a public relations specialist and press aide to Suffolk County Executive John V.N. Klein.

He relocated to Houston in the mid-80's to be closer to family, and resumed his long career in journalism as a writer for the Houston Chronicle. He worked as a reporter until 2006, when his eyesight failed.

DeMangin was married to the former Elsie Leanson Smith of Brooklyn, NY, for 53 years, until her death in 1995. He was also predeceased by a son, Charles S. DeMangin, and a sister, Marion Moffett. He is survived by daughters Barbara Brooks; Tiffany Soltis and her husband, Kyle Soltis, all of Houston, Texas; and Nancy McCourt and her husband Bill, of Hilton Head Island, S.C., and Port Jefferson, L.I. He is also sur- vived by a sister, Catherine Stanford, and three grandchildren: David Eliassen, and Allison and Elizabeth McCourt. Burial was at the National Cemetery in Houston, Texas.

+++ EDNA WEST of Glendale died on June 25, 2009 at the age of 93. She was the widow of the late James West and devoted mother of Dennis West and Carol Bennett; also survived by six grandchildren and six greatgrandchildren. Services were held at the George Werst Funeral Home, 71- 41 Cooper Avenue, Glendale, followed by interment in Calverton National Cemetery.

+++ VERONICA BRITSCH died on June 28, 2009 at the age of 98. She was the widow of the late Earl, devoted mother of Linda Calvelo and Janice Peterson, and fond grandmother of Sherri, Gayle, Richard and Debra; also survived by great-grandchildren Meredith, Hayden, Kristina and Ashley. A religious service was held at the Papavero Funeral Home, 72-27 Grand Avenue, Maspeth, followed by interment in All Faiths Cemetery.

+++ MIRIAM VEGA KONRAD died on June 25, 2009 at the age of 72. She was the beloved wife of Manfred and dear sister of Alvaro Vega, George Vega and Virginia Salazar. A private cremation service was held at Fresh Pond Crematory under the direction of the Papavero Funeral Home, 72-27 Grand Avenue, Maspeth.

+++ JOHN R. BYRON died on June 26, 2009 at the age of 70. A native of County Sligo, Ireland, he was the loving father of Karen, John, Brendan and Mark, and fond grandfather of Brendan, Erin, Daniel and Amber. He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Vietnam War. Mass of Christian Burial was offered at St. Mary's Church followed by interment in Calvary Cemetery under the direction of the Papavero Funeral Home, 72-27 Grand Avenue, Maspeth.

+++ STELLA GRABOWSKI of Ridgewood died on June 24, 2009 at the age of 85. A native of upstate New Hampton, she was the widow of the late Peter and devoted mother of Michael Grabowski. Services were held at graveside followed by interment in Calvary Cemetery under the direction of the Morton Funeral Home/Ridgewood Chapels, 663 Grandview Avenue, Ridgewood.

+++ PAULINE BAUMANN of Brooklyn died on June 25, 2009 at the age of 94. She was the widow of the late Herman, devoted mother of Paul Baumann and mother in-in-law of Lisa; also survived by grandchildren Paul Jr. and Jennifer. Mass of Christian Burial was offered at St. Brigid Church followed by interment in Pinelawn Memorial Park under the direction of the Morton Funeral Home/Ridgewood Chapels, 663 Grandview Avenue, Ridgewood.

+++ ROBERT SALGADO of Brooklyn died on June 25, 2009 at the age of 56. He was the loving son of Felisa Aponte and dear brother of Justo, Sacoro, James and Nelson (all Salgado). Services were held at the Morton Funeral Home/Ridgewood Chapels, 663 Grandview Avenue, Ridgewood, followed by interment in St. Charles Cemetery.

+++ FABIO ANTONIO CHAVEZ of Brooklyn died on June 23, 2009 at the age of 46. A native of San Jose de la Matas, Dominican Republic, he was the devoted father of Marilyn Santana and Kenny, Melissa, Joshua, Evelyn and Ariana (all Chavez), loving son of Rosello Chavez, and dear brother of Lydia Gonzalez, Ines M. Rodriguez, Teofilo A. Gonzalez, Myra Chavez Martinez, and Jose R., Cecilio, Rafael, Juana, Minerva, Lourdes, Ramona, Claudio, Milagros, Tomas, Yosania and Yelin (all Chavez); also survived by two grandchildren. Mass of Christian Burial was offered at St. Brigid Church followed by interment in Linden Hill Cemetery under the direction of the Morton Funeral Home/Ridgewood Chapels, 663 Grandview Avenue, Ridgewood.

+++ CHYSTIAN MOSZYK of Rockaway Park died on June 24, 2009 at the age of 62. A native of Mlynkowo, Poland, he was the beloved husband of Janina, devoted father of Adam and Krysztof (both Moszyk), and dear brother of Elzbieta Brzezniak and Maryla Moszyk. Services were held at the Morton Funeral Home/Ridgewood Chapels, 663 Grandview Avenue, Ridgewood, followed by cremation in Fresh Pond Crematory.

+++ JOSIF DJURA of Ridgewood died on June 28, 2009 at the age of 60. A native of Yugoslavia, he was the beloved husband of Dojna, devoted father of Daniel and Dorin (both Djura), loving son of Josif and Sofica Djura, and dear brother of Ijuleta. A native of Brooklyn, she was the dear sister of Mary Sciortino, Giovanna Elia, Theresa Mendolia, Frank Elia and William Elia; also survived by nieces and nephews. +++ RICHARD C. CROKE died on June 27, 2009 at the age of 75. He was the beloved husband of Angela, devoted father of Richard Jr., and brother-inlaw of Dorothy Rossi. Mass of Christian Burial was offered at Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal Church followed by cremation in St. Charles Cemetery under the direction of the Hess-Miller Funeral Home, 64-19 Metropolitan Avenue, Middle Village.

Services were held at the Hess-Miller Funeral Home, 64-19 Metropolitan Avenue, Middle Village, followed by cremation in Fresh Pond Crematory. ANTONIA NIEVES died on June 26, 2009 at the age of 84. She was the beloved wife of Gregorio, devoted mother of Anibal, Ana Morell, Enrique and Augustine, and dear sister of Sophia, Monserrate and Tita; also survived by four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Mass of Christian Burial was offered at Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal Church followed by interment in St. John's Cemetery under the direction of the Hess-Miller Funeral Home, 64-19 Metropolitan Avenue, Middle Village.
