Lawmaker Takes A Look Inside The Ridgewood YMCA

The doors of the still-under-reconstruction Ridgewood (formerly Catalpa) YMCA opened on Monday, July 13, as Rep. Anthony Weiner (second from right in the right photo) presented YMCA of greater New York President Jack Lund (at left) and Ridgewood YMCA Executive Director Gregory Maziarz with a check for $237,500 to go toward the building's reconstruction. Located at 69-02 64th St., the 78-year-old former courthouse has served as a YMCA since 1973. Its reconstruction, at a cost of $6 million, includes the creation of 10,000 feet of new usable space, by reconfiguring several portions of the building to maximize usable space and by capping the building's courtyard. The left photo shows the northeastern portion of the building, which will be the YMCA's gymnasium. According to Lund, the YMCA hopes to open the site by the start of the 2009-10 school year in September.
