Drunk Driving Crash On L.I.E.

Two people were injured after their SUV collided with a sedan allegedly operated by a drunk driver on the Long Island Expressway near the Middle Village/Elmhurst border early last Thursday morning, Oct. 15, Fire Department sources said. Reportedly, the crash occurred at around 4:45 a.m. along the eastbound lanes of the roadway near the Woodhaven Boulevard exit. According to information obtained by FDNY sources, the alleged drunk driver—described as a female—was traveling at a high rate of speed when her vehicle lost control and slammed into an SUV. The impact caused both vehicles to overturn. Members of Engine Co. 287, Squad Co. 288, Ladder companies 136 and 163, Rescue 4, Battalion 46, the 104th Precinct, the NYPD Highway Patrol Unit 3 and Emergency Services Unit 10 and EMS units responded to the scene. The occupants of the SUV were reportedly freed by first responders through the use of the Hurst tool—known as the “jaws of life”—and taken to a local hospital with injuries not considered to be life-threatening. The driver of the sedan was taken into custody by police on DWI charges, it was noted.
