Man Fatally Shot On Sunnyside St.
Suspected Shooter Collared In Florida
The alleged gunman who fatally shot a 25-year-old Elmhurst man and another individual in front of a Sunnyside home during an apparent dispute last Saturday, Oct. 24, has been captured in Florida, according to police. Law enforcement sources said that the suspect—whose identity was not disclosed as of press time—was taken into custody by police in Orlando, Fla. on Tuesday night, Oct. 27. Authorities were able to identity the gunman and his whereabouts with the help of an anonymous tip. Reportedly, the gunman shot 25- year-old Edison Vera of 60th Road in Elmhurst and a 25-year-old male in the vicinity of 48th Street and Queens Boulevard at 8:25 a.m. last Saturday morning. According to police sources, the shooting was believed to have been triggered by an apparent drug deal. During the gunfire, Vera was struck under the arm and in his chest, while the other male was shot in the abdomen. Officers from the 108th Precinct responded to the scene along with EMS units. Both men were taken to Elmhurst Hospital Center for treatment; Vera was pronounced dead on arrival, while the other man was listed in stable condition. Following their arrival at the scene, various police units canvassed the surrounding area for evidence and the suspects involved in the shooting. A gun believed to have been used in the murder was recovered at nearby Calvary Cemetery, NYPD sources stated. The case was subsequently presented to the 108th Precinct Detec- tive Squad for further investigation. During their probe, police reportedly obtained information from an anonymous source that the suspect behind the shooting had boarded a bus bound for Orlando. Police in New York alerted law enforcement agents in Florida to the case and the alleged gunman’s arrival. Orlando police officers took the suspect into custody upon his arrival in the central Florida city Tuesday night, law enforcement sources said. Members of the 108th Precinct Detective Squad flew to Orlando later on Tuesday evening to pick up the suspect and extradite him back to New York. As of noon on Wednesday, Oct. 28, the suspect had yet to arrive back in New York, authorities said.
