Dragons Sluggish In Loss To St. Gregory
3-2 Defeat Drops Record To 4-4
The first half saw the Dragons outplayed by St. Gregory’s. St. Margaret’s seemed to be still asleep at the outset but still managed to be tied at the end of the first half. The defenders watched as St. Gregory’s walked on through the defense to push across the game’s first goal. The Dragons managed to knot the score with an extraordinary effort by Nicolette Wurglics in stealing the ball and leading Anthony Cardinale with a pass through St. Gregory’s defense. Cardinale drove in all alone and blasted the tying goal past the goaltender. St. Margaret’s came out for the second half with a better effort but it was St. Gregory’s who netted two goals to take a 3-1 lead early in the half. The Dragons kept up the attack and were finally rewarded for their hard work with midfielder Sal Turriciano’s relentless attack that caused a turnover. Turriciano then sent a pass to the streaking Cardinale whose second goal of the game brought them to within one with just over 5 minutes left to play. St. Margaret’s had a chance to tie when Turriciano broke free down the right side but couldn’t manage to get a shot off before the defense recovered. St. Margaret’s kept up the pressure with midfielders Alex Licari, Peter Stimpfl and Derek Stock keeping the ball deep for forwards Vincent Ciulla, Jillian Hubert, Cardinale and Wurglics. The Dragons had a chance to tie the score with a minute left in the match when John Pszeniczny’s corner kick sailed in front of the goal but no one could put it past the crowded net as the ball trickled past the goal crease and then cleared out. St. Margaret’s will finish off the regular season this coming weekend with games versus Our Lady of Hope and Our Lady of the Snows.
