Latin Mass At St. Matthias To Celebrate Annunciation Feast
Tridentine Service Next Thu. In Ridgewood
St. Matthias Church and its Concert Choir will offer another celebration of the traditional “Tridentine” Latin Mass at the landmark church in Ridgewood next Thursday, Mar. 25, at 7 p.m.
Fr. Joseph Wilson of St. Margaret’s Church in Middle Village will once again be the celebrant of the Latin Mass, which marks the Solemnity of theAnnunciation.
The musical setting will be the “Mass in honor of Junipero Serra” by American composer Richard Keys Biggs. Organist at Blessed Sacrament Church in Hollywood, Calif. for 35 years, he also recorded and performed widely. Other motets are by Cherubini and Saint-Saens.
The Tridentine Mass was the liturgy used in every Catholic church from about the seventh century A.D. until after the Second Vatican Council. Pope Benedict XVI has directed that the traditional Mass in Latin should once again become a normal part of the Church’s life.
The singers of the St. Matthias choirs come from all sections of Queens to perform sacred music in the setting for which it was intended. The concert choir is directed by Joseph Kubler; Msgr. Edward B. Scharfenberger is pastor of St. Matthias Church, located on Catalpa Avenue between Forest and Onderdonk avenues.
