Sunnywood Apartments, a 30- year-old, 78-unit complex at 44-20 64th St., will see 15 of its apartments renovated.

In addition, the center’s community room, lobby, parking lot and outdoor seating areas will all see upgrades, the facility’s bathrooms will be brought up to Americans With Disabilities Act standards and an outdoor terrace will be renovated and reopened.

The project was designed by local architect Laura Heim and financed thanks to a city-approved refinancing of the facility’s mortgage in cooperation with the city Department of Housing and Urban Renewal; the building’s two sponsors, Sunnyside Community Services and Woodside on the Move; and City Council Member Jimmy Van Bramer.

“This was a no-brainer,” Van Bramer noted. “Preserving affordable housing for seniors is probably the most important thing we can ever do.”

Van Bramer also received a plaque from Woodysun HDFC, the organization governing the apartment complex.

The facility, it was noted, was originally built with the help of Woodside on the Move co-founder Kevin Mahon.
