Vets Forum In Maspeth Monday
Learn About Available Benefits, Services
Rep. Grace Meng and City Council Member Elizabeth Crowley announced they will host a special forum for veterans who reside in Queens this Monday, July 15, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at Maspeth High School.
The forum is designed to help borough veterans access the many benefits and services that are available to them through various government agencies. These services include healthcare options, education and training opportunities, mental health counseling, disability benefits, home loan and housing programs, pensions, employment assistance, life insurance, new resources for female veterans, compensation benefits, assistance with transitioning from military to civilian life and much more.
The event will include a presentation by representatives from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs and tables from a more than two dozen organizations that serve Queens veterans. Participants are listed below.
“We can never thank our veterans enough for all the sacrifices they’ve made for our nation, and we must do all we can to ensure that they have access to the benefits and services that they require,” said Meng. “But a lot of Queens Veterans are unsure how to access those resources, and many are unaware that they even exist. That’s why I urge all local veterans to come out to this critical workshop. Allowing us to connect them to the benefits and services that they’re entitled to receive is yet another way to express our deep gratitude for their service to our country.”
“The men and women of the United States armed forces risk their lives to defend our freedoms,” added Crowley. “When they come home, their service can never be forgotten, and they deserve the best healthcare, education, and employment opportunities our country and city have to offer. I am proud to sponsor this event for our returning heroes.”
Confirmed participants include: the Queens American Legion, Vietnam Veterans of America Queens Chapter 32, Allied Veterans Memorial Committee of Ridgewood and Glendale, New York-based Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America (IAVA), New Era Veterans of the Bronx, Borden Avenue Veterans Residence of New York, Hollliswood Hospital in Jamaica and its Military Wellness Program, Hope for the Warriors organization in New York, Samaritan Village in Briarwood, New York Urban League, Maspeth Federal Savings, Queensborough Public Library and many others. Confirmations are expected this week from other local veterans and educational organizations as well as New York-based corporations.
Maspeth High School is located at 54-40 74th St. in Maspeth. The forum is free of charge but registration is strongly recommended.
